Create a short summary of your note with a footnote

A note can sometimes go way beyond what you had intended as you try to capture everything, forcing you to scroll through thousands of characters later on when looking for a specific sentence/phrase. I know I've had to write mini essays during meetings just to ensure there's nothing left to chance, and truth be told, going through this after the meeting often seemed daunting and I'd sometimes postpone it until I couldn't. So I came up with a solution; add a conclusion at the bottom, where I could summarize everything in 400 or less characters. It wasn't always 400 or less characters, but the objective of summarizing the note was achieved.

While writing one of these summaries, I thought to myself, why not add a section for this in the note page? Until then, I had to scroll to the bottom to get the summary, which was part of the note's content. It made total sense; add a preview so that I don't have to scroll to the bottom of the note to get the summary and a separate view where I could add/edit the text in the summary. However, more pressing tasks at the office kept me occupied, forcing me to postpone development for quite a while. All I could do was start working on the designs, which I did at a leisurely pace.

I finally got a break recently and started working on it. Fast forward, version one is nearly complete and should be available on the playstore by Fri, 23 2024.

What to expect

For this iteration, expect a simple user interface allowing you to summarize your ideas in the note. With a character limit of 400, it'll be quite a unique challenge for you as you try to summarize the content of a long note. I have personally had challenges creating a 400 character summary for some of my notes, leading me to question whether 400 characters are enough. Nonetheless, I remind myself that that's the whole point of a summary, conciseness. The user interface will probably change as I continue to experiment, in search of a both functional and visually appealing user interface.

So, as a user why and when would you use this? The footnote can help you save time and not have to go through the entire note when you don't have the time to do so. It also comes in handy when you want to share a note, instead of sharing a lengthy note you can simply share the footnote that summarizes the note.
You can use the footnote just like I do, when in meetings or any other forum where you are noting something down and the content you've captured is way more than you'd anticipated. You can also use the footnote to help improve your writing as you try to summarize your notes, in an effort to cut out the noise.
